Ted Lieu Biography

Ted Lieu is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California’s 33rd congressional district since 2015. The district serves much of western Los Angeles, as well as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Bel Air, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Beach Cities.

Ted is a former active duty officer in the U.S. Air Force and currently serves as a Colonel in the Reserves, stationed at Los Angeles Air Force Base. In Congress, Ted has established himself as a leader on the environment; cyber security; civil liberties; government ethics and veterans.He has been an outspoken proponent for tackling climate change. The first bill Ted introduced after coming to Congress was the Climate Solutions Act, which aims to make California’s ground-breaking renewable energy goals and climate emissions reduction targets a national model. In 2019, Ted introduced an even more aggressive version of the legislation in order to tackle society’s most pressing issue.

As one of only four computer science majors currently serving in Congress, Ted is frequently sought out for his insight on technology and innovation matters including cyber security, cloud computing and innovation as well as the sharing and creative economy. He has also introduced legislation to prioritize consumer safety in technologically-advanced cars as well as legislation that would ensure law enforcement and tech companies protect consumer privacy.

Ted has been a leader in Congress against ethnic and racial profiling, and discrimination against the LGBT community. He serves as Whip of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, and Co-Chair of the Cloud Computing Caucus.Ted was first elected in 2014, having taken over the seat of Henry Wax man, who retired after serving in Congress for 40 years. In 2015, Ted was elected president of the Democratic Freshman class by his colleagues. In his first term in Congress, seven pieces of legislation sponsored by Ted were signed into law. This includes bills to provide housing for homeless Veterans and retrofit vacant buildings at the West LA VA campus; combat foreign propaganda and misinformation; and require more stringent cleaning instructions for medical devices.

Lieu and his wife Betty a former California Deputy Attorney General reside in Torrance, California, with their two sons, Brennan and Austin.

Ted Lieu Congress

Lieu won a September 13, 2005, special election to fill the 53rd Assembly district following the death of incumbent Mike Gordon. Lieu defeated three Republicans, including physician Mary Jo Ford and fellow Torrance City Councilman Paul Nowatka. Ted Lieu Vs Kenneth Wright

Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat, won another term representing California’s 33rd Congressional District, beating Kenneth Wright, a Republican.With all precincts reporting, Lieu had 70 percent of the vote, followed by Wright with 30 percent.

Lieu has represented the district in the House since 2015.Democrats gained a majority in the House, with 235 seats in the next Congress. All of California’s House seats have been decided; seven switched hands, all going to Democrats.The number of votes cast for Democrats in House races increased by 55.0 percent from the 2014 midterms, compared with an increase of 25.6 percent for Republicans.The district went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a margin of 41.3 points. Clinton won California by 30 points.

Ted Lieu Trump

Ted, a frequent critic of President Trump, applauded the president’s decision on Wednesday to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria.” In a tweet he says I applaud the decision by Donald Trump to withdraw US troops from Syria,” Lieu tweeted several hours after the official White House announcement emerged.

“Neither the Obama Administration nor the Trump Administration had a strategy,” Lieu added. “Neither Administration could articulate why we were in Syria, what the end state would be, and how we would achieve it.”

Lieu’s tweet came in response to a CNN report that Sen. Marco Rubio had called the decision a “great disservice” to the U.S.
