She was born to a Jewish family in Los Angeles, California. She was born to Adele Marilyn and Ira Yellin and is the only daughter and has one sibling Seth. Her father was a real estate developer who mostly focused on restoring older homes in Los Angeles neighborhoods.

She attended St. Augustine-by-the-Sea elementary school (now named Crossroads Elementary, of the Crossroads School for the Arts and Sciences) in Santa Monica, CA. She later attended The Westlake School for Girls in LA, where she was the president of her graduating class.

After high school, she joined Havard College. She graduated from Havard College magna cum laude and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She served as National Political Correspondent at CNN where she traveled the country covering hotly contested races throughout the network’s 2008 and 2012 ‘America Votes’ election coverage before she served as the Chief White House Correspondent. She also covered significant policy debates in Washington.

In August 2007, she joined CNN as a Capitol Hill correspondent. Before working for CNN, she was a  White House correspondent for ABC News, where she began working with the ABC in July 2003 and reported on politics and culture programs.

She has traveled and reported from around the world, including China, Russia, Mongolia, Latin America, and Europe. She has had a chance to interview Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and First Lady Laura Bush. She was an overnight anchor and correspondent for MSNBC before joining the ABC News. During the 2000 recount in Florida, she covered the story as a general assignment reporter at WTVT-TV in Tampa.

In 1998, is when she began her broadcast career general assignment reporter for Orlando’s 24-hour cable news channel, Central Florida News 13. She was later named morning anchor in 1999. Her good work has been published in Details Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. 

In August 2013, she served as a substitute anchor and became chief domestic affairs correspondent. She was not impressed with the move and on October 2013, she decided to leave CNN. She was the regular guest host for WBUR’s program On Point in the fall of 2014, while Tom Ashbrook took time off to deal with family issues.
