Gregory is originally from New York. His family moved to San Diego when he was a teenager. Since he got there, he says that he quickly fell in love with Southern California and has made it a point to try and stay close to home throughout his career.

Gregory landed his first job at KYMA in Yuma, Arizona, where he learned to anchor, produce, shoot and edit his own stories. He got his second job in KTNV in Las Vegas, Nevada as a weekend anchor and reporter. He later went back to San Diego for seven years as a reporter at KNSD before joining ABC7.

After the September terrorist attacks, he joined the California National Guard troops as they traveled to the Middle East on a mission to guard and protect U.S. military installations.
In 1995, he was awarded an Emmy for his coverage of the Tank Rampage in San Diego and in 1996 for the Harmony Grove Wildfires in San Diego.
