Mark Mullen Biography
Mark Mullen is an American television Journalist. He is the anchorman for NBC affiliate KNSD-TV in San Diego. Mark joined the station in June 2010 from ABC News. He had previously served as a Los Angeles-based correspondent. Mark was also Chief Asia Correspondent for NBC News. He regularly reported news on notable Chinese and East Asian current events.
Mark also contributed in-depth stories about China’s changing culture, economy and political system. He has also visited war zones to deliver stories from Iraq.
He covered stories from Europe and from across the U.S. The stories include the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. He’s also drawn on his experience as a pilot to report on major plane crashes.

His first job was as an anchor and reporter for WLOX-TV in Mississippi. The regional ABC affiliate covering the Gulf Coast. Mullen moved to KDFW in Dallas in 1989.
He also moved to KRON in San Francisco in 1991. In 1997, he was made anchor of the national ABC overnight newscast World News Now.
Mark returned to local news. He was with stints in Seattle and a return to KRON. This was before joining NBC News as a national correspondent in 2003.
Mullen assumed a post in Beijing in 2006. He assumed it as NBC’s first full-time correspondent. He worked in China since Ned Colt left in 2004.
The new role was part of NBC’s expansion of its bureau. He was also tied to the network’s effort to increase the visibility of China in anticipation of an iris broadcast of the 2008 Olympic Games.
Mullen produced a number of notable stories while in Beijing. The stories included a weeklong series on the “NBC Nightly News” called “China Rising”.
China Rising examined a multi-faceted. It changed China in the context of the October 2007 Communist Party Congress
Mullen also contributed to the year-long series of Olympic countdown broadcasts. He contributed for NBC’s “Today” and “Nightly News.”
His August 8 live stand-up from Tiananmen Square was the first live broadcast from the square. This was due to the Chinese government crackdown on student demonstrators in 1989. Mullen has also won numerous national and regional awards for his work.

Prior to his taking the helm anchoring the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm newscasts with Catherine Garcia and Monica Dean, Mullen served as Chief Asia correspondent for NBC News based in Beijing, regularly reporting on notable Asian and Chinese current events with in-depth coverage of The Olympics– filing stories for NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, MSNBC and CNBC.
In the run-up to the 2008 Olympics, Mullen became the first journalist to broadcast a live report from Tiananmen Square since the Chinese government crackdown on student demonstrators in 1989.
Over the years, Mullen’s assignments have also included reporting from war zones. He was recognized for his story in Iraq about the Kurd’s first ever vote in that country’s historic election.
Mark also covered stories in the Middle East, Europe and throughout the US including Hurricane Katrina, the aftermath of 9/11, and The California Wildfires.
The majority of the stories Mark did as an NBC domestic correspondent were based here in Southern California, many in San Diego.
Prior to joining NBC, Mullen was at ABC News in New York where he anchored World News Now, America This Morning and was a correspondent for ABC’s World News Tonight and Good Morning America.
Mark’s career began in 1987 after graduation from Loyola University of the South. His first assignment took him to Mississippi and WLOX-TV.
He later went on to work for newsrooms at KDFW-TV in Dallas, KRON-TV in San Francisco and KING-TV in Seattle
Mark has won numerous national and regional awards for anchoring and reporting, including a National Emmy Award for Outstanding News Coverage. The Society of Professional Journalists also named him Outstanding Young Journalist of the year.
