KPRC’s Jacob Rascon gave up national news, now competes against dad back home

The reporter and weekend morning anchor for KPRC (Channel 2), Houston’s NBC affiliate, is recording a segment for a holiday special about three winter sports that can be played even in the balmy Bayou City.

In the temperature-controlled Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex, he’s dressed for the part – including a gray Nike pullover proclaiming “PyeongChang 2018,” which promotes NBC’s coverage of the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea. And though it probably sounded like a cool idea to have the station’s Abilene-born new guy try his hand – and feet – at figure skating, ice hockey, and curling, the reality could turn out to be a humbling body check.

So when little Jenna Cope, who has been skating since she was 2, offers to show him how to do a two-foot spin, Rascon is not so sure. “I’m a little worried,” he admits.

But then Rascon, who played street hockey as a kid and dabbled in ice hockey when he attended Brigham Young University in Utah and Idaho, holds his own. Though no one’s going to confuse him with Brian Boitano, the journalist manages to remain upright and escape the rink without leaving behind a trail of broken teeth, ER bills or embarrassing viral videos. In fact, by the end of the evening – after struggling with the curling stone and then scoring at least one goal on the hockey players – Rascon sounds like he might be considering a career shift.
