Lilia Luciano Biography
Lilia Luciano is an award-winning television investigative journalist, filmmaker, and public speaker. She is the investigative reporter at ABC 10 in Sacramento and was the chief investigative correspondent on Discovery Channel’s Border Live.
In 2019 she was awarded a Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism as a special commendation for enterprose for her four-part documentary series, Puerto Rico Rises, which she directed and produced for ABC Sacramento, a TEGNA station.
In 2018 her coverage of the Northern California Wildfires of 2018 received a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuous Coverage. She won two Regional Emmy Awards in 2018 for California Wildfires coverage and one for Puerto Rico Rises. In 2013 Luciano was also awarded a GLAAD award for her coverage of homophobia in U.S. Hispanic media.

Lilia Luciano: ‘They even told me that my name was toxic’
For the first time, after her departure from NBC when her contract was canceled for having been involved in the supposed edition of the call to 911 in the case of George Zimmerman , Lilia Luciano broke the silence, and exclusively for the magazine Cara Mía, she recounted with bravery how his career collapsed, how doors closed in his face, and he even confessed that he had to work in restaurants to pay for his studies.
“After that came four years of doors that closed in my face. They even told me that my name was toxic, and I had no other choice than to start writing my own story, ” the Puerto Rican journalist tells the magazine.
When he talks about writing his own story it is because after the scandal he decided to travel to Barcelona, Spain and go back to school. Then she invested what she had left in producing herself a documentary about the fight against drugs, which she made in Colombia, at the risk of losing everything.
However, its risk paid off and HBO bought the documentary and just launched it globally.
Despite the blow, Lilia says in the magazine that she now feels a better person. “It was as if I had been thrown from a 30th floor without protection. The biggest learning of my life came after that moment … I went from being a national correspondent of NBC to looking for work as ‘hostess’ in a restaurant to pay for my studies, ” she confesses to Cara Mía with courage.
‘Outer Wars’, her documentary tells that war on drugs, she got herself into the middle of the jungle and today, after all, she had lived, Lilia assured them: “I have developed a criterion … As a journalist, one of my missions is the voice of those who do not have it to claim their rights. ”

As an investigative reporter at ABC 10, Luciano has uncovered patterns of corruption in family court through an ongoing multipart series. She has run investigations on sex trafficking, low teacher diversity, campaign financing, police shootings, including daily coverage of the shooting of Stephon Clark in 2018.
Her HBO documentary film, released in 2016 uncovers the social, environmental and health impacts of aerial spraying in Colombia.
As a VICE News host, she investigated the oil and gas industry’s impact on Louisiana’s loss of coastal land. At VICELAND’s Black Market Dispatches, Luciano embedded with a caravan of gasoline smugglers, hiding in a racing car filled with 400 galons of contraband gasoline.
