Sue Pompeani grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania & she often visited Washington D.C. as a child since her Aunt and Uncle lived nearby. Back then, she used to laugh at stories of school closings for two inches of snow, but now she is the one forecasting those closures! Sue grew up in a home with her teacher parents, and went to Edinboro State College to pursue a teaching degree.

That teaching-acting combination would become important when Sue took her first TV audition at the NBC station in Erie. She recalls the interviewer asked her if she “knew all 50 states, because the last weathergirl didn’t and it was very embarrassing.”

Sue started at Fox 5 in 1985, after a short time in Richmond at WTVR. She is also a six-time Emmy Award winner for outstanding weather forecasting. Over the course of her career, Sue has covered stories on earthquakes, volcanoes, the eclipse of the sun in Curacao, and above a ground in a Hurricane Hunter’s aircraft.

She has also covered other non-weather stories, like the Presidential Lighting of the National Christmas Tree, and trick-o-treaters at her own house for Halloween.
When Sue won the Emmy Award in 1997, she wasn’t even at the gala, but was out chasing tornadoes in Oklahoma.

Sue and her husband Joe have been married for close to four decades. Joe still works in radio, and although these careers often lend themselves to travel oriented lifestyles, they have mostly remained in Washington. The couple went on to have two daughters – Elder one Liz Palka and the younger one Nora (born in 1989). Liz got married in 2016 and had a baby in 2017.

Joe did a brief stint in Omaha, where Sue taught school, and also in Richmond. When Sue was hired in Washington,she was the only female weathercaster and she was expecting. Upon disclosing her pregnancy, the female general manager said, “this will be good for us, the viewers will love it.”

Joe lost his job a while later, and stayed home to take care of their young daughters.
Throughout the couple have juggled child raising, work schedules, and time as a family. Now their daughters are grown, and Liz has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a news journalist.
