Pam Giganti returns to South Florida TV with new PBS show

Longtime South Florida broadcaster Pam Giganti is back on TV. The former WTVJ morning anchor is the host of a new weekly news and public affairs show on PBS called “Your South Florida.”

The show, which airs on WPBT-Ch. 2 in Fort Lauderdale/Miami and WXEL-Ch. 42 in West Palm Beach, debuts 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20. The show repeats in Fort Lauderdale and Miami noon Sundays and also airs 6:30 p.m. Sundays on WXEL.

Giganti said the show will delve into the serious issues of the community, from gun violence to housing and the jobs outlook, as well as positive stories about people in South Florida.

“There are so many great things that go on here that don’t necessarily get the attention they deserve,” said Giganti, who noted that she often heard from viewers that local TV news was depressing. “We describe it as going beyond the headline and digging deeper into issues that matter most to our community, further than you can get in a 20-second sound bite or in a one-minute story.”

The show’s first episode features an interview with former Florida Sen. Mel Martinez to talk about immigration. There is also a segment on President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach becoming the new winter White House and how the area will be a newsy focus for the next four years. An upcoming episode will have an interview with Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho to discuss education.

One way the show will differentiate itself from other local public affairs programs is a segment called “Your Take.” The show is working with the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High in North Miami Beach and G. Holmes Braddock Senior High in Kendall where student reporters will fan out into the community and ask people what issues and questions they want to see addressed on air.

The program will also have a profile each week that focuses on a South Floridian who does something unique and inspiring.

“We want to bring the positive stories into our program that we think could make people in our community proud and also be inspired by them,” added Giganti.

Giganti was a popular anchor on WTVJ, where she began in 2001. She co-anchored the weekday morning shift beginning at 4:30 a.m. In December 2015, she left the anchor chair to spend more time with her husband and three daughters, ages 12, 16 and 19. Giganti also teaches a course on television performance at the University of Miami.

Of the new show, she said, “I am really excited about it. It feels great as well because this is the direction I really wanted to go in…This is now taking it to the next level and taking those stories that inspired me and bringing it to the public.”
