A group of longtime casino developers announced details of a proposal to bring a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to Pope County. The plan includes a sports complex and RV park, according to a press release.
Tri-Peaks Entertainment, which was formed to create and operate the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Sioux City, Iowa, proposed a $230-million project that features a 44,450 square-foot casino, 300-room hotel, two live entertainment venues, four restaurants, a multi-purpose sports complex with outdoor fields and an RV resort.
“Our concept draws on the internationally-recognized Hard Rock brand while incorporating outdoor and recreational amenities informed by our discussions with residents of Pope County,” said Bill Warner, Tri-Peaks president, and CEO.
The group polled Pope County residents to assess what the community wanted to include in plans. They responded with requests for the sports complex and RV park.
“We’ve received a lot of valuable local input from the people of Pope County through our website, social media and from in-person discussions with residents,” Warner said in the release. “Our proposal is informed by what the local community wants to see in a project like this, and that’s the key to a successful partnership.”
In Thursday’s detailed written proposal to the Arkansas Racing Commission, Tri-Peaks included an economic impact study conducted by Union Gaming Analytics, a purported independent research firm. It estimates that the complex will create 1,649 statewide jobs and $229.2 million in recurring annual benefit to Pope County. In addition, the group offered to dedicate 2% of its annual gaming revenues to a charitable foundation chosen by Pope County residents.

A 17-year-old passenger died after his driver crashed near the Cavanal Scenic Expressway underpass Wednesday, according to a Poteau Police Department press release.
The unnamed Spiro male was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations showed that the 18-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on Witteville Drive shortly before 5:30 p.m. and lost control. He crossed the centerline and struck an underpass support structure curb. The impact caused the car to slide sideways before colliding with a concrete pillar.
Three other passengers, including the driver, were transported to the Baptist Health Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith with varying degrees of injury. Two were unconscious when LeFlore County EMS arrived, while one was awake but incoherent, said Greg Russell, Poteau police’s assistant chief. Of the three, one was a minor. The deceased teen was taken to a state facility for further investigation.
Alcohol may have played a role in the crash, according to the release. Open containers of liquor were found inside the vehicle. A blood sample was taken from the driver, an investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police expect the sample to return in a month or more, Russell said.
