In downtown Barre, it’s a busy time of year at Forget-Me-Not Flowers and Gifts. “Easter is really busy obviously and then we move into prom,” said owner Alexis Dexter. She loves prom season. “You dream of prom. You want to go to prom. The next step is your wedding,” she said. But for many people, especially young women, prom is expensive. Between getting hair done, nails did, makeup is done, buying flowers and dresses, people spend hundreds of dollars. “Not having the ability to have prom as you see on TV is such a weird concept that not a lot of people think about,” Dexter said.
But she thought of an idea. “The dress is the biggest part (of the experience) so if we can get them that, then we can give them a really good prom experience right from the start,” she said. So she’s converting the flower shop’s soon-to-be new location across the street into a temporary prom dress boutique. “We’re basically a dress shop that forgot to put price tags on things,” she said.
The community has donated more than 300 dresses, some of them are brand new with tags. Girls who register and stop into the shop on April 27 can get their hair and makeup done and take a dress home for free. “It’s crazy. I’ve got dresses that must be from the 1950s all the way up until last year,” said Dexter. She’s looking for more donations to make sure there are multiple options, so girls of all shapes and sizes can find the dress of their dreams. “You’re going to have a great time, you’re going to get this dress and you’re going to be really glad that you did it,” said Dexter. It’s her way of helping girls look and feel like a million bucks without paying a penny.
