Jimmy Roberts is a sportscaster for NBC Sports. The 13-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and writer, joined NBC in May 2000 after serving as a sports reporter for almost 12 years at ESPN, where he won 11 Sports Emmy Awards.
Jimmy Roberts Education
Roberts grew up in White Plains, New York, and graduated from White Plains High School in 1975. While is high school, he played varsity lacrosse, was the school’s morning announcer (originating the morning joke of the day), and occasionally wrote columns for his high-school newspaper, The Orange.
Roberts then graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. During his time at Maryland, he worked at the popular campus hangout R.J. Bentley’s Filling Station; one of his sports Emmys is on display there.

With more than 30 years of experience in journalism and broadcasting, Jimmy Roberts is known most recently for his work on NBC and Golf Channel as an interviewer, essayist, feature reporter and studio host. Roberts is a fixture on NBC and Golf Channel’s coverage of the PGA TOUR and other high-profile golf events, including the Ryder Cup.
He joined NBC Sports Group in May 2000 after a long career at ABC and ESPN. Starting in 1988, Roberts’ assignments as a SportsCenter correspondent included the World Series, NBA Finals, Super Bowl, heavyweight championship bouts, and the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994.

Roberts was a regular contributor to, and co-originator of ESPN’s Outside the Lines series as well. In 1987 and 1988, he served as a writer and producer of features at ABC Sports.
Before that, Roberts was an assignment editor and producer for ABC News (1985-87), where he coordinated and supervised coverage of sports for the division, as well as producing stories for ABC News broadcasts.
In 1984, Roberts worked for Howard Cosell on ABC’s SportsBeat, writing and producing features for the Emmy Award-winning show.

His sister-in-law, Debbie Mayer, worked in the south tower on the 56th floor at New York City’s World Trade Center. Immediately after American Airlines Flight 11 (the first aircraft of the September 11, 2001, attacks) struck the north tower, Mayer began going downstairs to leave the building.
Debbie had gotten to the 29th floor when the second aircraft struck, hitting the building she worked in. However, Mayer escaped safely before the towers collapsed.
Roberts told of the ordeal to USA Today:
We had a couple of very anxious hours. My wife couldn’t get through to Debbie. Finally, she went to her Manhattan apartment to wait for her. And she found her there. Turns out when the first explosion occurred in Building 1, Debbie started down the stairs. She had made it to the 29th floor when the building was shaken when the second plane hit. She was terrified but made it out.
