She also worked as a reporter at ABC affiliate WFTV, in Orlando, Florida. Jones started her journalism career at WICS-TV in Springfield, Illinois, covering state government. While there she was the only local reporter allowed onto death row to interview inmates after Governor George Ryan granted blanket clemency before leaving the office. She moved on to WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois, where she continued to cover the State Capitol and served as Decatur Bureau Chief. During her time there, she earned an Associated Press Award for Best Reporter and community honors for her coverage of social service issues. Jones went on to become a lead reporter at WREG-TV in Memphis, where she exposed violence against public school teachers and flaws in the Memphis City Schools electronic attendance system.
Jones has earned a reputation as an enterprising reporter who delivers exclusive stories and breaking news. During her tenure at WFTV, she was the lead reporter on the death of Trayvon Martin and the hazing death of Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion. Her coverage of both stories gained a national following. Known for holding public figures accountable, she interviewed Florida Governor Rick Scott days after the 2012 presidential election and pressed him on his controversial refusal to extend early voting in the state and the impact that may have had in delayed election results. Channel 9 News reports: “A Zellwood Elementary School student was arrested for attacking her teacher, according to Orange County investigators. Miesha Bryant is 10 years old, but she’s already charged with felony battery for what happened at her school. WFTV spoke with Bryant and her mother, Sebrina Bryant. “Did she need to be arrested?” WFTV reporter Daralene Jones asked Sebrina Bryant. “No. No. No,” she said. “I was shocked, devastated.” Sebrina Bryant said she was furious. She said her fifth-grade daughter was just as innocent as she looked in her mug shot. But Bryant was arrested and charged with a felony for allegedly hitting a teacher.”
