She was born to Florence Wu and Cheng Ching Wang and she was raised in New York City and is of Chinese descent. Her mother Florence worked as a translator for the United Nations and her father owned a medicine company.

She attended Friends Seminary but later transferred to The Chapin School. She graduated in 1967 from The Chapin School. After high school, she attended the University of Paris and earned a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College.

At the age of 8, she began figure skating and while in high school she trained with pairs partner James Stuart, and competed at the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She was presented as a debutante to high society at the International Debutante Ball at the Waldorf Astoria New York in 1968.

After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College she was hired to be an editor at Vogue and she became the youngest editor at the magazine. In 1987, she left Vogue after working there for 17 years and joined Ralph Lauren. She resigned after working at Ralph Lauren for two years and became an independent bridal wear designer.

She has made wedding gowns for various public figures such as Karenna Gore, Ivanka Trump, Campbell Brown, Alicia Keys, Chelsea Clinton, Mariah Carey, Sarah Michelle, Victoria Beckham, Avril Lavigne, Khloe Kardashian, Hilary Duff, and Kim Kardashian. Her evening wear has also been by Michelle Obama.

She also designed costumes for figure skaters. Her book Vera Wang on Weddings was released on October 23, 2001. She won the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Womenswear Designer of the Year in June 2005. She was also awarded the  André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design on May 27, 2006.

At the 2012 Academy Awards, Viola Davis and Sofia Vergara wore her evening wear at the 65th Emmy Awards. In 2013, was honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2018, Forbes placed her the 34th in the list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women with her revenues rising to $630 million in that year.
