Mark Matthews is an American multi Award-winning reporter working for NBC Bay Area serving as a reporter. He has been working for the network since April 2014.
Mark Matthews Career
Matthews is a reporter who previously worked at KGO-TV in San Francisco where he was a political reporter for more than a decade. Matthews reported live from the New Hampshire primaries and Presidential debates in 2004 and 2008; and both the Republican and Democratic national conventions in 2004, 2008, and 2012.
While covering protests outside the president’s ranch in Texas in 2005, Matthews got word of a big storm heading toward New Orleans. Matthews arrived one day before the Crescent City was ruined by Hurricane Katrina and spent the next ten days covering the aftermath.
His other major stories include Pablo Escobar and the cocaine cartels in Colombia, and the war between the Sandinistas and the Contras in Nicaragua, and Honduras. In the early 90’s.he also spent six weeks in Israel covering the Gulf war.
Matthews has been awarded three Emmy awards including one for an investigative series on Rick Daye – a man who was wrongly convicted of kidnap and rape. His reporting led to the courts requesting a DNA test – which was not available when Daye was convicted – and the results cleared him guilty.
Daye was imprisoned for 10 years and later released and investigators eventually found and convicted the man responsible. He has received a McGraw Hill Editorial Excellence award for the story and was named the Trial Attorney Media Person of the Year.
A national Iris Award, two San Diego Press Club Awards, and a Golden Mike Award from the Radio & Television News Association are his other career honors. Matthews graduated from the University of Texas, Austin with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism. At KSBY where he began his career, San Luis Obispo as a general assignment reporter and has also worked at KERO in Bakersfield, and KGTV in San Diego.
