In 1998, Mathai joined KNTV as Sports Director and transitioned to primary news anchor in 2011. Mathai has reported in various places: the Olympics in London, Vancouver, Turin, Athens, and Salt Lake City. He is among the people in the world to have run the Olympic Torch three times (1996, 2002, and 2008). From 2008 to 2012 he was part of the Giants broadcast team with Jon Miller and Mike Krukow during NBC Bay Area telecasts of the Giants.
Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, he worked for NBC stations in Fresno, San Diego, and Arizona. He became the country’s first Indian sportscaster in 1995. He served as a public relations assistant for the San Diego Chargers for five seasons before joining the broadcasting industry.
He and his family assist the Stanford Cancer Center, Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, College Track, Indian Community Center, and various other Bay Area charities. At the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Mathai is a regular guest instructor. Before his career as a broadcaster, he was a public relations assistant with the San Diego Chargers. Additionally, Mathai was part of the Super Bowl staff for the National Football League in 1993 and 1994.
